WebChorionic villus sampling (CVS) is the primary alternative to amniocentesis. In this procedure, a sample of tissue is taken from the placenta. The main advantage of CVS is that it can be done earlier, between 10 and 13 weeks of pregnancy. WebThe chorionic villi sample can give a clear picture of the genetic makeup of the developing fetus, including Down syndrome (or trisomy 21), trisomy 13, trisomy 18, triploidy, Tay-Sachs disease , sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis. CVS cannot, however, test for neural tube and other anatomical defects.
