Web26 jul. 2024 · Oct 11, 2014. Messages: 8,464. Location: Canada. I need to repair a stripped thread in cast iron. I tried a heli-coil in the past but it didn't work. I think a solid insert is better but I've read the key-serts aren't recommended for cast iron. It's a fine thread and I think 5/8" but I'd have to take the bolt out to measure. Web25 nov. 2010 · The first thing I'm going to try and simply tap the hole with a 3/8" tap. An M8 is almost exactly 5/16" which is what the hole in the head is right now since it's stripped. I should be able to run a 3/8" tap in the hole and use a 3/8" bolt which is between the M8 and M10. That seems like the easiest option and should work with no problem.
